Orihuela has been teaching youngsters at their summer camp how to save water in their own homes .

Low flow aerating heads , which are attached to taps , were demonstrated to the children . They reduce the amount of water used by mixing it with air .

200  low flow aerating heads were handed out to the children and local shops have been offering them for free during this first phase of the town council’s campaign .

Primary school children will also be presented with them at the beginning of the new term .

A transformer in a block of flats in Muchamiel , near Alicante , cauded 60 apartments to be evacuated last Sunday .

It seems that this transformer has already broken down a number of times and on this occasion a spark started a fire which set alight materials which caused a great deal of black , acrid smoke .

Residents were evacuated because of the danger from the smoke . They all returned once the fire had been put out , although they were then without electricity for many hours afterwards .

The residents are calling for a complete overhaul of the transformer now .

The claims engendered because of this has caused the council to review its public liability policy .

In 2002 the council would cover the first 600 euros of any claim whereas  in 2006 that figure had gone up to 6,000 euros .

To ensure cover , the council has to pay a premium of 60,000 euros .This year two claims came to 36,000 euros and the council paid the first 6,000 of each one .

There were high seas dramas when a Santa Pola fishing boat came across aboat full of immigrants , on their way to Spain .

The boat was stranded 100 miles off the coast of Libya this month .

The fishermen were confronted with a boat full of exhausted and dehydrated people , 10 of whom had died .

The survivors were taken to Libya but were not allowed to land until diplomatic channels had been cleared . Even then some of the occupants were too scare to go ashore .This is the fifth time that Santa Pola fisherman have intervened in a humanitarian venture such as this .

From 2009 Alicante council is going to increase the fines for those breaking bylaws .

At the moment most of these fines are set at 6 euros and they are issued by the local police .

Anyone who urinates in the street , drops litter , washes their car on the public highway etc , can be fined but from 2009 it will be levied at 100 euros for these misdemeanors .

The council is planning to get tough with those breaking these laws .

There is a possibility that a colony of American red crayfish are living in the River Segura near Dolores .

The species was intrioduced into Spain in 1975 and its presence was thought of as favourable by the AHSA who have an interest in these wetlands .

The crustaceans are eaten by birds and can be used for food by humans . However it is now known that the feeding habits of the crayfish can endanger the ecosystem and they can also displace the European fresh water crayfish .

The tax bills for Benitaxell have risen” substantially ” without any warning or explanation from the town hall .

The council deeply regrets the increases but says that they have inherited bills from the previous administration which have to be paid . These bills amount to 60,000 euros .

They also had to honour a payrise which had been agreed with the unions in 2007 , another bill which had not been budgeted for .These plus a number of other issues have left an accumulated deficit which the Suma have been asked to survey .

Consequently all properties will be surveyed for any improvements which have been carried out , so that they are included in the rateable value , so increasing the value of the property .

Many of those affected are pensioners and finding the extra money will be difficult for them . A meeting will be held on September 19 to discuss the issues .

A new highway from La Font de la Figuera to Cieza has been announced by the public works department in Murcia and the contract has been awarded .

Within the contract they will build a new stretch of road will be made between the A31 and the A35 that will connect to Valencia , Albacete and Alicante provinces and would then eliminate the bottleneck which exists at the moment .

The project will cost 95 million euros and will be toll free . It will provide jobs and improve communications .

A melanoma prevention campaign has been announced by the regional health officials and Altea council .

It will take place in Altea La Vella at the beginning of September and will be free of charge . They will take place between 10.30 and 14.00.

Melanomas can appear on any part of the body and represent only 5% of tumours but they account for 75 % of all deaths from skin cancers .
